No right to free parking at Sainsbury's

At last week's Consultation on the Willesden Green Cultural centre plans the Brent Council Mayor Projects and Regeneration representative stated that the Council had an agreement with the nearby Sainsbury's store to provide 2 hours free parking for local residents.  This was in response to concerns about the lack of parking at the new Cultural Centre with the current car park handed over to the developer for the building of flats. It was made clear that there was no room for negotiation on the issue.

A request for clarification from Sainsbury's at national level has produced this reponse:
Thanks for your email regarding the parking limit in our Willesden Green store.

I've spoken with the Store Manager, Jonny Magill, about your query.  He's confirmed the car park is for our customers only, and anyone seen to be using the car park to shop elsewhere will be issued with a ticket.  Jonny has said they'll of course use their discretion when customers are shopping with us and may wish to pop to the High Street for some other items.  I hope you find this information helpful.

We appreciate you taking the time to get in touch with us and hope to see you in store again shortly.
Kind regards

  1. Cllr Powney has posted this on his blog:

Martin Francis has been told by Sainsburys that they have no obligation to provide parking to any but their own customers. My understanding is that the Willesden Sainsburys has a planning obligation to provide car parking to Willesden Town Centre under a deal originally laid down by planning in the 1980s.Martin

  2. I would like to know what provision there is to protect the residents of Brondesbury Park and Staverton Road once the car park has gone. The current residents parking restrictions will not cover all the opening times of the new centre. The increased demand for parking on these roads at weekends and evenings will significantly affect us. It is disingenuous to say 'people will just take the bus'.

  3. I am also nervous as a resident of Grange road on the parking allocation for the new suggested flats? These flats if full could house well over 300 people. with 40 parking spaces being built for them? All of the one bedroom flats have been allocated NO parking spaces whatsoever? So I am guessing people in one bedroom flats probably do not drive according to the people behind these designs? Roads which are already greatly undercatered for parking will then loose the library car park and gain another 300 residents you do the math as I cannot figure how this adds up? Also as a resident of grange road I notice that my current view will be replaced with the back of a six story block of flats was anyone from the council or architects or builders actually planning on showing the residents of grange road what eyesore will will have to look at for the rest of our years and at what cost to our properties by lowering the visual standards and surroundings of our road.

  5. Free parking space is a happiness for the people. However, we need to travel and park the cars at the terminal then we need to compromise often but we should not compromise on quality and security, There are services like valet parking Gatwick that is cheaper but high in quality.
